Nursery offers a new ‘Select’ tree range

ONE OF the UK’s leading commercial nurseries has this month (October, 2015) unveiled a new tree range as a result of recent research and development.

Wyevale Nurseries has selected and improved forms of standard tree ranges and now have new varieties, which are available as bare root, root balled or container grown, in commercial numbers available and have named them its ‘Select’ range.

Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, said: “The new range includes:

“Betula pendula ‘Select’ – this recent introduction boasts an attractive upright pyramidal shape with impressive white stem colour. Its ascending canopy makes it an excellent alternative to wild type Birch if space is limited. Deciduous.

“Prunus padus ‘Select’ – offers a strong growing, tight upright, uniform habit with smaller leaves than Prunus padus Watereri. A more vigorous grower than ‘Albertii’. Just the right combination to make this lesser used native more popular as a landscape tree.

“Quercus robur ‘Select’ – a good semi-upright, strong growing, uniform selection of the species. More open than Quercus robur fastigiata Koster.

“Tilia cordata ‘Select’ – a much improved form of Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’ with darker leaves, vigorous growth and uniform habit.”

Along with introducing new varieties Wyevale Nurseries explored growing techniques and planting concepts.

Adam added: “Our specialist range of pleached trees, true multi stem trees and pre-formed hedging in troughs provide instant impact and stunning architecture to planting schemes – commercial or domestic.

“Pleaching trees is a technique of pruning that produces a flat frame creating a 2-dimensional effect with branches spreading sideways in one plane (i.e. flat) held on top of a central tree stem. These are commonly used to create a green screen above a fence level or a raised wall. We have a selection of pleached Carpinus and Prunus varieties available as container grown trees.

“True multi stem trees are grown and trained from the base of one tree (many suppliers simply pot multiple plants together). The growing stem is cut at a young age and a minimum of three or four shoots are then trained to produce lovely, true multi stemmed trees. We produce true multi stem trees in a range of varieties available as both field grown rootballed and container grown trees.

“Pre-formed hedges are plants that have been intensively pruned and trimmed into shape to give an instant desired effect of a finished hedge. Currently we have Euonymus, Carpinus and Fagus growing a pre-formed hedges in troughs.”

Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.

The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.

The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.

Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.
