In 1998 Kjetil Titlestad a Norwegian entrepreneur decided to set up a nursery in the U.K. to produce plants for the Scandinavian market. It was important to find a location in which to grow hardy plants that could stand against harsh climatic conditions. He finally chose Norfolk where he found the ideal climate to specialize in the cultivation of top quality plants.
Since then the nursery production has developed in an impressive way. Viking nurseries now grows 77 different varieties of conifers, and also 25 of rododendrons, in a range of pot sizes: 1.4L, 4.5L, 10L. They also grow different varieties of hardy Camellias, Pieris, azaleas, Taxus and Buxus. 2009 has been a very good year for Viking Nurseries with a 30% sales increase of which total export accounts for over 90%. This makes it today’s UK leading plant exporter for the Northern European market. This achievement is due to a number of factors and one of the most important is the experience of Nursery Manager Mr. Stuart Murch. With the help of highly skilled local staff, Stuart carries out the daily work commitment in order to guarantee a top of the range product.
QUALITY CONTROL ON EACH PLANT
The Success of Viking Nurseries is also largely down to the Quality of the Final Product. The Plants selected
for dispatch are monitored throughout the growing season for Pests and Diseases, with four checks a year
undertaken by DEFRA. Also each Export Assignment is checked and issued a Plant Health Certificate before leaving the nursery. Due to the expertise gained over the years and the demand for good quality products, Viking Nurseries is now looking to invest in the future. The development of an adjoining 26 Acre field (recently Purchased) will double the present production capacity.
A visit to the Nursery is strongly recommended in order to inspect the quality and range of the plants grown in this lovely countryside location just outside Norwich.
