Family-run nurseries team up to restore beautiful barn back to former glory

Two long-established, family-run firms, Johnsons of Whixley and Ray Skelton (Harrogate) Ltd, have teamed up to supply plants for a stunning Grade II listed, newly-renovated barn.

Popular wedding venue Tithe Barn is set within the grounds of the Duke of Devonshire’s majestic Bolton Abbey Estate in the Yorkshire Dales and has had developers Cripps & Co working on restoring the barn, built in the 1500s, back to its former glory.

As Ray Skelton (Harrogate) Ltd carried out ground works such as seeding, turfing and planting work, fellow family-run North Yorkshire commercial nursery, Johnsons, was enlisted to supply £19,000 worth of products which included 78 trees, 13 pleached Quercus Ilex and over 3,000 shrubs.

Ray Skelton (Harrogate) Ltd senior estimator Colin Simpson said: “It has been such a privilege for us to be associated with the renovation of Tithe Barn. I can see the beautifully-landscaped gardens and magnificent views being on many wedding photographs for years to come.”

Johnsons of Whixley marketing co-ordinator Ellie Richardson added: “It’s fantastic to have been involved in the transformation of Tithe Barn. We have supplied the Bolton Abbey Estate for many years so it’s lovely to be able to supply another area too. Ray Skelton (Harrogate) Ltd has done a wonderful job of the outdoor space as always and the barn itself is spectacular.”

Johnsons amenity sales representative Andrew Barker commented: “It is wonderful to be involved in projects where the planting really finishes the project. Hopefully it will provide a backdrop for some fantastic wedding pictures. As always, it’s been great working with true professional contractors such as the team at Ray Skelton (Harrogate) Ltd.”
