British-grown Cercis exclusive to Wyevale family

A COLLECTION of 10 British-grown Cercis are being stocked exclusively by the Wyevale family of garden centres nationwide this year (2009).

One-hundred-and-twenty-one garden centres all over the country, including Bridgemere Nursery & Garden World in Cheshire, Blooms Garden Centres, Heighley Gate Nursery & Garden Centre in Northumberland, Old Barn Nursery & Garden Centre in West Sussex, Peter Barratt’s Garden Centres in the North East and Sanders GardenWorld in Somerset, are each stocking a selection of the range.

Adam Dunnett, Horticulture Buyer for the Wyevale family of garden centres, said: “The range of Cercis includes 10 varieties grown on a British nursery. Not all of these are available in all our garden centres, but a good selection will be available in each centre and via our website, www.wyevale.co.uk.”

The range includes Cercis Appalachian Red and Cercis Cascading Hearts in 10 litre pots and Cercis canadensis alba, Cercis chinensis Avondale, Cercis reniformis Texas White and Cercis chinensis Don Egolf in five litre pots.

Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy, Cercis canadensis Hearts of Gold, Cercis canadensis Lavender Twist and Cercis reniformis Oklahoma are available in both five and 10 litre pots.

Plants in five litre pots are priced £24.99 each and those in 10 litre pots are priced £39.99 each.

Cercis canadensis alba – White Redbud has deciduous foliage and rare white flowers in the spring with pale green leaves. Planted in well-drained soil in partial shade/full sun it will eventually reach three metres in height.

Cercis reniformis Oklahoma – Eastern Redbud is deciduous and has rare pink flowers in the spring with glossy green leaves. Planted in well-drained, humus rich soil in full sun it will eventually reach two metres in height.

Cercis chinensis Don Egolf – Redbud is deciduous and has magenta pink flowers in the spring with deep green leaves. Planted in well-drained, humus rich soil in partial shade/full sun it will eventually reach three metres in height.

Cercis reniformis Texas White – Redbud is deciduous and has pure white flowers in mid to late spring with glossy green leaves. Planted in well-drained, humus rich soil in full sun it will eventually reach two and half metres in height.

Cercis canadensis Hearts of Gold – Redbud is deciduous and has golden heart-shaped leaves with lavender coloured flowers in spring. Planted in well-drained and humus rich soil in partial shade/full sun it will eventually reach two and half metres in height.

Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy – Redbud Forest Pansy is a large deciduous shrub with broad heart-shaped, deep red purple leaves and small, pink flowers in spring and summer. The flowers are infrequent and this shrub is grown mainly for its foliage. It is happy planted in any aspect (north, east, south or west) in partial shade/full sun. It has a spreading habit and can spread to 12 metres. Forest Pansy can be planted in soils with an acidic, alkaline or neutral pH and it will eventually reach 12 metres in height.

Cercis chinensis Avondale – Chinese Redbud Tree is deciduous and has profuse cerise pink flowers in late spring. Planted in well-drained soil on a south-facing wall it will eventually reach two and half metres in height. It can also grow well in partial shade.
